TAUP Midterm Elections Brief How You Can Make a Difference, Day 2

eBulletin 20180920

Day 2: Please Donate to TAUP’s Committee on Political Education (COPE) Fund

TAUP endorses candidates for elected offices who support strong public institutions, education, labor unions and workers. We can support candidates in several ways. We can inform our members of candidates we feel will fight for our issues; our members volunteer to help with phone banks, or to work with other union members knocking on doors in candidates’ districts; and we can offer financial contributions through our Committee on Political Education (COPE). We’ll be in touch shortly about the candidates we’ve endorsed and others endorsed by our state and national affiliates, along with how you can help their campaigns.

COPE is not funded by dues. It is supported through separate, optional donations that many members choose to make every month through payroll deductions, or in a single donation during critical election cycles. The COPE fund is overseen by TAUP’s Treasurer, Norma Corrales-Martin. Officers and other elected TAUP representatives meet with candidates to discuss issues that are critical to members. Once candidates are vetted, recommendations are sent to the Executive Committee for final voting on decisions about COPE spending.

Not every battle can be fought at the bargaining table. As we’ve seen recently, some are fought in the courts, in City Hall, in state houses, or at a federal level. The upcoming elections are critical to many public institutions, and there are many excellent candidates who need support.

Please consider contributing to COPE. You can make a one-time donation to offer an extra boost to candidates in this important election cycle, or you can choose to make a regular COPE contribution from your monthly paycheck. Donations can be for any amount, and even small contributions of $1 to $5 per month help.

Contact the TAUP office if you’d like to start or increase your COPE donation. If you’re interested in a one-time contribution, you can make a check out to TAUP COPE and bring or mail it to the Union office:

Run for TAUP Office and Nominate Candidates for Constituency Councils

e-Bulletin20180314

T A U P Elections 2018

Do you want to shape working and teaching conditions at Temple?  Do you have ideas for how to help TAUP better serve members? Do you have goals and ideas for the next contract campaign? Do you know someone who would be a good representative for your field or school? TAUP is seeking members  to run for a seat on one of three faculty Constituency Councils: Adjunct, Non-Tenure Track, and Tenure Track.

Constituency Council members are the active voice for their constituents among our nearly 3,000 members. They serve as the communication channel between our Executive Committee and our membership, making sure that the Executive Committee is aware of each constituency’s voices and that each constituency is aware of initiatives and questions raised by the Executive Committee. Constituency Council members help engage and recruit members so that the Union can be responsive to its members and can do the work it needs to do.  Each Constituency Council meets at least once per semester. If you want to run or have a good candidate in mind, let us know!

Constituency Council members typically serve three-year terms. Delegates serve one-year terms.

We also have seats for alternate delegates who can represent TAUP at affiliate meetings, such as the AFT national convention.  These posts are open to all dues-paying members—faculty, librarians, and academic professionals.

Incumbents may run for re-election.  There are no term-limits on Constituency Council or Delegate seats.

How to Get on the Ballot and Election Timetable

The Nominating Committee is responsible for drawing up the slate. Any dues-paying TAUP member interested in running for a seat on their Constituency Council should send a declaration of interest and a statement of purpose (max. 250 words) to the Nominating Committee, c/o taupaft@gmail.com by March 30. (Members can also get on the ballot through a petition; for details, see Article I.2 of the TAUP Bylaws.)

Ballot information will be emailed to all dues-paying members on or about April 2.

Elections for the Constituency Council will take place from April 16-23.

(Note: Paper ballots will be provided upon request and will be available on or about April 16.  All paper ballots must be received at the TAUP Office (Ritter Annex 721 (004-15)) no later than noon, April 23.)

Ballot counts will be announced at a General Membership Meeting, details TBA.

Your Vote Needed on Amendments to the  AFT-Pennsylvania Constitution!

e-Bulletin20171010

Dear Members of TAUP,

TAUP is affiliated at the state level with the American Federation of Teachers Pennsylvania (AFTPA), which represents 36,000 members, including teachers and school-related personnel, health care professionals, higher education faculty members and state employees.  AFTPA provides TAUP with valuable resources, training, and advice.

After the 2017 Biennial conference, the Executive Committee voted to move forward two amendments on electing Vice Presidents of the AFTPA.   Vice Presidents play an important role in the AFTPA, serving on the Executive Council that oversees the statewide union’s finances  and other business, including its biennial convention.   You can find the AFTPA Constitution and Bylaws here.

The first amendment lowers the number of members that larger local chapters need to elect Vice Presidents of AFTPA.

The second amendment deals specifically with higher education.  At this year’s Biennial Convention, local affiliates were informed that Higher Education would no longer be considered a “region” of its own, entitled to elect its own Vice President.  Its locals, if not large enough to elect their own Vice Presidents, would thus vote as part of geographical regions along with K-12 and other affiliates.  The amendment seeks to reverse this decision by re-affirming  “Colleges and Higher Education” as its own region.

The Executive Committee of TAUP recommends voting “yes” on both amendments. The first would make it more likely that TAUP would be eligible to elect its own Vice President to AFTPA, thereby giving us more of a voice.  The second rightly acknowledges that there is a community of interest among colleges and universities.  That community of interest would be diluted if higher ed locals under the threshold for having their own Vice President had to vote with all of the K-12 locals in their geographical region.

The more votes we pass on to the AFTPA, the stronger our voice!

Your ballot is here.  Please take a moment to cast your vote now. The deadline for doing so will be October 13th at noon.
